This walk is designed to give you a chance to use both ice axe and crampons, to give you a basic level of understanding of avalanche avoidance and emergency shelters, and of course winter navigation all under the expert guidance of our instructors.

All we ask from you is a good level of hill walking fitness and the desire to experience winter walking.

Day 1: Departure

08:30-09:30
Arrive at the designated meeting point for a welcome briefing. Kit check and weather update with a prompt departure. Kit fitting and readiness is essential before we set off.

Winter skills session

09:30-16:00
Looking at movement skills and how to carry the additional equipment required in Winter. Further days would be required to practice all the skills required to be safe in the Winter Mountains, but this day is a great opportunity to get out for the first time and experience it. Discovering how the Winter Season changes the landscape and risks associated with that. We will focus on movement in Crampons, avalanche awareness and basic self arrest techniques.

Back to base

16:00-16:30
Arrive back at base for a debrief, de-kit and a rewarding drink, chat and relax.

Day 2: Start

08:30-09:00
Meet up and quickly review our plans for the day. Looking at what you learnt the previous day, you will be asked to make suggestions on the route and plan for the day. Don’t worry, the ultimate decision will be left to our fully qualified guide.

Winter skills session continuation

09:00-15:30
Continuing on from Day 1, we refine your movement skills and techniques when using the winter equipment. We look at decision making, route planning and emergency procedures whilst travelling through the national parks.

Back to base

15:30-16:30
Arrive back dor a review of the two days, questions, reference material and advice about what next for you as a winter walker. Then a cuppa, cake and relax.
